Position Summary



Service, maintain, inspect, test, repair, install, and modify various elevator electro/mechanical systems and related equipment. Dismantle de-energized electrical components; repair fused and non-fused switches, circuit breakers, and relays. Disassemble defective units; replace electric wiring, faulty safety devices, contacts, coils, relays, linkages, fuses, and circuit boards. Replace ropes, hoists, governors, tapes, selectors, reader hears; repair or replace MG sets, undercuts, bearings, hangers, rollers, clutches, pick-up assemblies, car operating panels, hall button stations, and controllers. Conduct yearly safety tests on traction elevators and full-load pressure tests of hydraulic elevators. Respond to trouble calls involving emergency repair or replacement. Work from wiring diagrams in the installation and modification of elevator controls, components, and equipment. Report discrepancies in existing wiring diagrams to supervisor in order to keep as current as possible. Evaluate problems involving minor repairs and determine cause; select appropriate materials and equipment required to complete repair. Write accurate reports and maintain elevator maintenance log books; complete surveys for Lead Elevator Mechanic in timely manner. Write work orders and status reports, materiel orders, request parts as needed; complete all forms in accurate and timely manner. Submit completed work orders to supervisor for closing out project. Orally discuss and/or provide written reports/updates of repairs to keep supervisor informed of job progress and/or operational concerns. Follow established safety procedures at all times including inspecting tools and equipment for signs of damage, malfunction, or deterioration on a regular basis. Upon completion of work, clean up job site and return equipment, materials, tools, radios, pagers, and Kronos wants to designated storage areas. Respond to off-hours emergencies and overtime as required.

Qualifications



  • Working knowledge of all elevator systems, e.g., hydraulic, electric, gearless, variable voltage, and solid state; theories of operating and servicing procedures of elevator systems, e.g., sequence of operations, motor controls, and dispatching. (Required)
  • Ability to troubleshoot electro/mechanic systems for malfunctions, damage, or deterioration or need for adjustment by reading indicator lights on equipment, checking for burnt, loose, or dirty contacts and wires, worn out or broken parts and faulty wire insulation (Required)
  • Ability to maintain and repair various electro/mechanical equipment and systems, e.g.,vertical and horizontal conveyors, stage and handicap lifts, adjusting elevators for maximum performance, and correctly and skillfully operate the various standard tools and equipment of the elevator mechanic trade (Required)
  • Knowledge of all levels of elevator code requirements, e.g., Los Angeles City Codes, State of California codes, Fire and Seismic Safety Codes, and their specific interpretations and applications to appropriate elevator components. (Required)
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand technical language in wiring diagrams. Ability to modify and/or adapt designs, procedures, or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications. (Required)
  • Oral communication skills to obtain or convey clear, concise, and grammatically correct information. Skill in reading/writing standard English text in order to follow through on written orders, carry out assignments and complete reports that are accurate and easy to comprehend (Required)
  • Ability to stand, crawl, walk, and stoop; push, pull, and lift or lower objects up to 50 lbs.; using mechanical assistance, hoist, lower, push, and pull large objects weighing up to 500 lbs. Ability to distinguish among colors. (Required)
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, indoors and outdoors, in wet or humid weather and in fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures. Ability to work under adverse situations and conditions, e.g., dirty, noisy, etc (Required)
  • Working knowledge of UBC, OSHA, and ADA requirements as it relates to the function. Ability to recognize discrepancies of ADA and Fire/Life/Safety codes at each job and report to supervisor. (Required)
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, subordinates, supervisors, administrators, customers, visitors, and outside agencies (Required)
  • Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing and skill in estimating material and labor requirements to accomplish task (Required)
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and various shifts (Required)


Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations



  • Must possess State of California Competent Conveyance Mechanic License (Required)
  • Must possess valid California Driver's License, Class C and ability to drive a University truck or other light vehicle in the course of duties (Required)
