Job Description

The Associate Director of Economic Development within the Office of Innovation manages business development efforts on behalf of the University of Iowa Research Park Corporation and supports the development of corporate engagement on behalf of faculty, departments or colleges as opportunity develops, as well as acting as a liaison between the Office of Innovation and the local business and economic development community to promote the objectives and strategies central to the University's mission. The position reports to the Chief Innovation Officer/UI Research Park Corporation President. This person must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and collaboration abilities. They must be experienced and understanding of bioscience commercial real estate needs, local economic development drivers and stakeholders, able to deploy strong communication, business development skills and experience.

This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location .

Key Areas of Responsibility

Client/Case Management

  • Oversee efforts to build a robust strategy for attraction and development of the University of Iowa Research Park Corporation.
  • Manage Research Park development projects in conjunction with Research Park Associate Director and the UIRP President.
  • Work as a Liaison to units on campus needing business development support to create partnerships with industry.

Outreach

  • Assist with campus-wide education of our programmatic elements when appropriate, while promoting the office and faculty innovation successes and challenges.
  • Maintain a strong network of industry contacts, continually seeking competitive intelligence and new opportunities. Actively participate in relevant industry meetings and conferences.
  • Create a strategy of engagement within the state of Iowa with targeted industries.

Business Development Assistance

  • Participate and lend direction to meetings and events and opportunities to engage advisory networks supporting Iowa Innovation Leaderships Fellows, Biodesign program, and faculty and staff inventors and entrepreneurs.
  • Support state relationships to IEDA, Iowa Bio, TAI and local business development offices.
  • Support development and growth of UIRP BioVenture Center programmatic elements and storytelling.

Student Monitoring

  • May provide support and guidance for student employees and interns as needed.
  • Maintain compliance and training per University of Iowa requirements.

Financial Responsibilities

  • Support the advisory Board of Directors to the University of Iowa Research Park Corp.
  • Propose, manage and execute approved programmatic budgets with others in the Office of Innovation and at the University of Iowa Research Park.

Supervision

  • May provide support and guidance for administrative staff as needed.
  • Maintain compliance and training per University of Iowa requirements.
  • May provide support and guidance for student employees and interns as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in business or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 years' working experience in Health Technology, Entrepreneurship, or Technology Development.
  • Direct or proximal experience with startup companies and entrepreneurs, economic development organizations.
  • Experience working on real estate development initiatives for attracting or retaining bioscience companies.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills including strong oral and written capabilities.
  • Demonstrate analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working as a business development liaison and leading negotiating between corporate partners in both the public and private domains.
  • Experience as a liaison working between government, econ dev organizations and private industry.
  • Experience working throughout real estate development process from attraction to development and construction.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
  • Travel within the state will be required. Must have a valid U.S. driver's license and pass the University of Iowa 3-year driving record review.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Possess analytical capabilities such as creating calculated fields, managing large datasets, creating sophisticated Excel models, understanding and building forecasting models.
  • Experience in / understanding of key financial/economic concepts.
  • Experience and/or certifications for common analytical platform.
